About the event

James Alexander Hamilton, son of America's first Treasury Secretary, lived through nearly a century of American transformation, from the Constitutional Convention through the Civil War. A sharp political thinker and an astute observer, he moved among the most influential figures of his age and left behind an extraordinary record of the era, offering us a unique perspective on the evolution of the American government and the nation's long, painful reckoning with slavery. A lifelong New Yorker, Hamilton made his home at Nevis, now Columbia University's Nevis Laboratories. This talk explores his world, personal experiences, and the turbulent century he witnessed.
